Atoley Salon & Spa

· 319 S Phillips Ave, Sioux Falls, SD 57104, USA

I've walked past 319 South Phillips more times than I can count — that's downtown Sioux Falls for you, the stretch where you notice everything eventually — and I always wondered about the name. Atoley. It sounds like a word borrowed from somewhere else, something with history attached to it, and maybe that's fitting for a salon that feels like it's been holding space on Phillips longer than most of the newer builds around it.

Inside, it's the kind of place where they do both hair and spa services, which means you could go in for a cut and come out with your eyebrows shaped and your back unknotted. I like that they don't try to be one thing exclusively. The stylists seem to actually listen — I've heard friends talk about bringing in pictures and having real conversations about what's realistic for their hair type, not just nodding and doing whatever's trendy. There's something to be said for that kind of honesty.

The space itself isn't trying to be a cathedral of mirrors and marble. It's clean, functional, the kind of setup where you focus on the work being done rather than the Instagram potential of the lighting. I respect that. Booking can sometimes be tricky — they're busy, and if you want a specific stylist on a Saturday, you're planning ahead or getting lucky.

What I appreciate most is that they've stayed put. Phillips Avenue has changed a lot in the last decade, new restaurants and boutiques cycling through, but Atoley just keeps doing the work. Haircuts, color, facials, massages — the everyday maintenance of looking and feeling like yourself. That consistency matters in a neighborhood that's constantly reinventing its sidewalks. Sometimes you just need someone who knows what they're doing with scissors and doesn't overthink it.
