Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen

· 600 N Main Ave Unit 110, Sioux Falls, SD 57104, USA

I've walked past Bread & Circus in the Jones421 building on Main Avenue probably fifteen times before I finally went in — something about the name made me think it would be precious or overly clever, and I was wrong about that. It's a sandwich shop that knows exactly what it's doing, which in a city where most lunch spots are either chains or trying too hard to be something they're not, feels like a small miracle.

The menu is straightforward — sandwiches built around good bread and ingredients that actually taste like themselves. I tried the muffaletta on my first visit, and the olive salad had that sharp, briny punch that makes you understand why people in New Orleans won't shut up about this sandwich. The bread held up under the weight and oil, which is harder than it sounds. I've been back for the roast beef with horseradish cream — it's the kind of thing that makes you realize how rarely sandwiches have any actual personality anymore.

The space is small, utilitarian, tucked into the ground floor of what used to feel like downtown's sleepiest block before the Jones421 renovations. There's counter seating along the windows where you can watch Main Avenue foot traffic, which on a Tuesday at lunch is mostly people in business casual walking purposefully nowhere. The service is efficient without being robotic — they remember regulars, but they won't force conversation if you're clearly just there to eat and leave.

My one complaint is the hours — they close at 3pm, which makes sense for a lunch-focused spot but also means if you're craving one of their sandwiches after work, you're out of luck. It's the kind of practical limitation that keeps a place sustainable but occasionally frustrating when you're driving down Minnesota Avenue at 5pm thinking about that muffaletta.

I keep coming back, which around here is the highest compliment I can give.
