I've driven past the Highline Plaza location more times than I can count — usually on my way to Target or heading back toward 41st after some errand I've already forgotten. Freddy's sits there in that retail cluster off Louise, the kind of strip center that feels simultaneously brand-new and already lived-in, where the parking lot always has a few cars but never feels packed.
The first time I actually stopped in, I'd been curious about the custard situation. I'm not going to pretend I'm some frozen dessert purist, but there's something about custard — thicker than soft-serve, richer than regular ice cream — that hits different on a humid July afternoon when you've been running around town. The chocolate custard sundae I ordered was genuinely good, dense and cold and sweet in that way that feels almost medicinal after a long day.
The steakburgers are thin-patty style, which I know isn't everyone's preference — some people want that thick, char-grilled situation — but I appreciate the crispy edges and the way everything stacks together without falling apart mid-bite. The fries are shoestring-thin, which means they get cold fast if you're not paying attention, but fresh out of the fryer they're exactly what you want with a burger.
What I notice most is how Freddy's operates in that middle space between fast food and sit-down casual. You order at the counter, they bring the food to your table, the whole thing takes maybe ten minutes. It's efficient without feeling rushed, clean without feeling sterile. The staff has always been friendly when I've been there, even during what I assume is a dinner rush.
Is it going to change your life? No. But sometimes on a Wednesday evening when you don't want to cook and you're tired of the same three places you always go, Freddy's does exactly what it promises — a solid burger, good custard, and you're back in your car heading toward McKennan or Whittier or wherever home is within half an hour.
