I've driven past Harvey Dunn Elementary on Bahnson more times than I can count — it sits just south of 26th Street in that stretch of southwest Sioux Falls where the neighborhoods spread out and kids still ride bikes to school. The building itself is named after Harvey Dunn, the South Dakota prairie painter who grew up in Manchester and later taught illustration in New York, though I wonder how many families know that when they're dropping off their kindergarteners in the morning loop.
What strikes me about Harvey Dunn is how it feels embedded in its neighborhood — not showy, not trying to be anything other than a place where kids learn to read and subtract and figure out how to stand in line. The elementary schools in this district all have that same solid, functional presence, but Harvey Dunn has the advantage of location. You're close to Western Avenue for groceries, close to the Parks and Recreation fields where half the school shows up on Saturday mornings, close enough to feel like you're in the city but far enough south that you're not stuck in the 41st Street corridor traffic every afternoon.
The school feeds into Edison Middle and then Roosevelt, which means you're looking at the southwest pathway through the district — a route plenty of Sioux Falls families know well. I've heard parents talk about the staff here the way you want to hear people talk about elementary schools: first names, specific teachers, the kind of familiarity that means someone's paying attention.
It's not the newest building in the district, and the playground equipment has that well-used look that comes from a decade of recess, but that's not necessarily a problem.
