Jacky's Burrito Express

· 2315 W 12th St, Sioux Falls, SD 57104, USA

I've driven past Jacky's on 12th Street maybe a hundred times — that stretch between Kiwanis and Minnesota where you're always running one errand or another — and I finally pulled in on a Tuesday when I had twenty minutes between calls and needed food that felt like someone actually made it.

The counter setup is straightforward — you order, you wait, you eat — but what comes out of that kitchen doesn't taste like it's been sitting under heat lamps since breakfast. I got a carnitas burrito because the woman ahead of me ordered one and it looked ridiculous in the best way. When mine arrived, I understood. The pork had that pull-apart texture that only happens when someone's been patient with it, and the beans weren't just filler — they had seasoning, intention. The salsa verde had actual bite.

Here's the thing about Jacky's that I didn't expect: the rice. I know that sounds small, but most burrito places treat rice like packing material. Theirs tastes like they're cooking it with something — stock, maybe, or tomato — and it makes the whole burrito feel cohesive instead of like four separate ingredients wrapped in a tortilla.

The space itself is small, maybe six tables, and the acoustics are what you'd expect from a tile-and-drywall setup. It gets loud when it's busy. But I've been back four times now, and I keep thinking about how rare it is to find a place in Sioux Falls where the food tastes like someone's abuela would approve — not because it's fancy, but because it's right.

I brought my cousin from Tea last week. She ordered the breakfast burrito at two in the afternoon and said it was better than the place she drives to in Brandon. I believed her.
