The thing about the Original Pancake House is that it's not trying to reinvent breakfast. They're making classic American pancakes, waffles, and omelets the way they've been made for decades. The Dutch Baby comes out in a cast iron skillet, puffed and golden, with lemon and powdered sugar. The Swedish pancakes are thin and delicate, served with lingonberries. The apple pancake is — I'm not exaggerating — the size of a pizza pan.
It's always packed. Families from Harrisburg and Tea drive in for weekend breakfast. The booths fill up with church groups from Cathedral District. You'll see retired couples reading the Argus Leader over coffee, construction crews before their shift, high schoolers after sleeping over at a friend's house.
The wait times are real, especially between 9 and 11 on weekends. The parking lot off 41st can be a mess. But they move people through efficiently, and the coffee comes fast once you're seated.
I think what keeps me coming back is that it's consistent — not flashy, not chasing trends, just good breakfast done right in a city that appreciates the difference between a pancake and a *pancake*.
