Shenanigans On Phillips

· 775 N Phillips Ave, Sioux Falls, SD 57104, USA

I've driven past Shenanigans on Phillips more times than I can count — that corner of 8th and Phillips where downtown starts shifting from office towers to the neighborhoods that radiate north toward Whittier. It's the kind of spot that doesn't announce itself with neon or attitude, just a straightforward bar and grill that's been holding down this stretch while the rest of Phillips gets shinier.

Walk in and the vibe is lived-in — wood booths, a long bar, the sort of place where you can nurse a beer after work or bring the whole crew for burgers and apps without anyone batting an eye. I've seen people in here on a Tuesday afternoon and on a Saturday night, and somehow it works both ways. The menu leans into bar food done right: wings with decent heat, burgers that come out how you asked, fries that don't need an apology.

What I think makes Shenanigans work is that it doesn't try to be something it's not. No reclaimed barn wood, no craft cocktail program with house-made bitters — just a neighborhood bar that happens to sit at the edge of downtown's gravity. The staff knows regulars by name, and if you're new, they don't make you feel like you're crashing someone's living room.

The location can feel a little in-between — not quite in the thick of downtown's Phillips Avenue action down by 10th Street, not quite settled into the residential blocks up north. Some nights that means it's quieter than you'd expect for a place this close to everything.

But that's also the appeal. Shenanigans is where you go when you want a cold drink and hot food without the scene — when you're tired of hunting for parking near the Cathedral District or dealing with the weekend crowds down by 9th. Just a solid neighborhood bar doing what it does, one pint at a time.
