Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate
The Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation is a federally recognized tribe comprising two bands of the Isanti or Santee Dakota people. During their 2002 tribal general elections, they approved a measure changing their name to Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, the latter word in Dakota language meaning people or nation. The Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate of Lake Traverse Reservation is located in the northeastern part of South Dakota and a small portion of southeastern North Dakota, with reservation boundaries spanning 7 counties including 2 in North Dakota and 5 in South Dakota.
The tribe has 14,000+ tribal members throughout the United States and abroad in the Armed Forces. The Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate is the tenth largest employer in the state of South Dakota. The Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate operates three casinos including one in North Dakota and two in South Dakota. The tribal government manages comprehensive services and economic development supporting tribal member well-being and cultural preservation.
