Stensland Family Farms sits in one of those spaces you could miss if you're not looking, tucked between other storefronts in a way that doesn't announce itself with neon or gimmicks.

The first thing you notice inside is the cold case. Flavors rotate, but they're not playing the usual game of cramming in cookie dough and calling it artisan. These are dairy farmers — fourth generation, out in Larchwood, Iowa — so the cream base is the whole point. I tried the salted caramel first, then the espresso, and what struck me wasn't some wild flavor explosion but the texture. Dense. Almost chewy. The kind of ice cream that coats your spoon and doesn't melt into sugar water after thirty seconds in a Sioux Falls summer.

They do pints to go, which I've kept in my freezer more times than I'd admit in print. The birthday cake flavor is a guilty pleasure I won't defend — it's sweet bordering on too sweet, but sometimes that's exactly what you want after a long week of editing dense copy and sitting in traffic on Minnesota Avenue.
