Taqueria La Jarochita

· 5005 W 12th St, Sioux Falls, SD 57106, USA

I've driven past the stretch of West 12th where La Jarochita sits more times than I can count — that part of town where the strip malls blur together and you could easily miss something good if you're not paying attention. But once you step inside, the bright green walls and hand-painted signs make it clear this isn't trying to be anything other than what it is: a family-run taqueria serving the food someone's abuela would approve of.

The menu's straightforward — tacos, tortas, quesadillas, the kind of lineup where you order three things and immediately wish you'd gotten six. I went for carnitas and al pastor, both on corn tortillas that had that slight char I'm always looking for. The meat was tender, properly seasoned, piled high enough that I had to eat carefully to avoid losing half of it onto the plastic basket liner. Salsa bar's got three options, and the green one has enough kick that I felt it in my sinuses for a good ten minutes after.

It's a small operation — counter service, a handful of tables, the kind of place where you can hear the kitchen working behind you. The hours can be unpredictable, which I've learned the hard way showing up on a Tuesday to find the lights off. And yes, it's in a building that's seen better days, sharing a parking lot with a check cashing place and a tobacco shop. But that's also what makes it feel real in a city that's rapidly smoothing over its rough edges.

If you're expecting white tablecloths or a Instagram-ready interior, this isn't it. But if you want tacos that taste like someone actually cares what they're sending out — the kind that make you think about them days later while you're stuck in a meeting — then La Jarochita's worth the drive down 12th.
