I've driven past The Fruit Truck Market on Kiwanis a dozen times before I finally pulled in — one of those spots you keep meaning to visit until one Saturday you just do. The building sits low and unassuming, painted bright with produce stands outside when the weather cooperates, and inside it's like stepping into a European market that decided to set up shop in Sioux Falls.
The name undersells it. Yes, there's fruit — gorgeous pyramids of citrus, dragon fruit I've only seen at Whole Foods in other cities, mangoes that actually smell like something. But walk past the produce and you're in Eastern Europe. Shelves packed with Polish pickles, Russian chocolates, Georgian spices in languages I can't read but want to try anyway. There's a deli case with salami I didn't know existed, cheeses that aren't shrink-wrapped, bread that was baked that morning.
The woman at the counter told me they started as an actual fruit truck — driving around town selling produce before opening the brick-and-mortar. You can still feel that energy, like they're excited you showed up, like they want you to try the weird sour cherry juice or the halva they just got in.
It's not perfectly organized — you'll hunt a little, ask questions, feel slightly lost in the best way. The aisles are narrow, boxes still half-unpacked sometimes, handwritten signs mixing English and Cyrillic. But that's the point. This isn't Hy-Vee.
